Highlights
Work requirements are a policy failure: Why are they still an option?
Work requirements do not increase employment or chart a path to self-sufficiency. Instead, they take necessities like food and healthcare away from people who can’t afford to lose them and put heavy cost burdens on states and localities. Our nation needs a thriving economy. But expanding work requirements is not the way to get there.
How to Ensure Millions of Children Don’t Lose Medicaid Coverage Erroneously
Five million children could lose their Medicaid benefits during the Covid-19 public health emergency (PHE) “unwinding.” Automatic enrollment is ending, and parents and caregivers could lose coverage for their kids simply because of a language barrier, a recent move, or something as innocuous as a new phone number. Fortunately, despite the PHE ending, states have some discretion in how quickly and equitably they move through the renewal process. RWJF President and CEO Richard Besser and Joan Alker, executive director of Georgetown University’s Center for Children and Families, share three steps states must prioritize to maintain coverage for children.
