Increasing understanding about the effectiveness of America's healthcare system.

The Dartmouth Atlas documents variations in how medical resources are distributed and used in the United States.

The project uses Medicare data to provide information about national, regional, and local markets, as well as hospitals and their affiliated physicians. Data made accessible through the Dartmouth Atlas enables comparison in the effectiveness and efficiency of states, regions, individual hospitals and associated physicians in treating chronically ill patients.

From 1994-2007, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation supported the Dartmouth Atlas through funding for the Medicare database, analyses by project investigators, and the production of research reports.

This research has helped increase understanding of our health care system among policymakers, the media, health care analysts and others,  and form the foundation for many ongoing efforts to improve health and health systems across America.
