When we work together to create opportunities that improve health equity for everyone, we’re Building a Culture of Health.

What do we mean by a Culture of Health?

Imagine everyone in America having a fair and just opportunity to experience health and well-being. Where every person—no matter where they live, or work, or how much money they make—has a chance to thrive. Where policies, structures, conditions, and practices support all people in all communities. That means having access to nutritious food, affordable housing, education, transportation, and job opportunities. In a Culture of Health, individuals and families work together to explore new ideas and reexamine ideas once overlooked. All feel safe. Connected. And understood.

Focus Areas

To advance health equity, we invest in these four broad areas

  • Health Systems

Bringing key health systems together around a shared goal of better health for all

  • Healthy Children and Families

Supporting research and programs that expand our understanding of growing up healthy

  • Healthy Communities

Supporting initiatives that help communities reach their greatest health potential

  • Leadership for Better Health

Helping leaders address health challenges across the nation

Our Action Framework

The Action Framework serves as a national guide for how to work toward building a Culture of Health in ways that promote health in all forms, for all people.

We developed this framework in collaboration with the RAND Corporation to identify priorities and action areas that drive measurable, sustainable progress.

Measuring Our Progress

Measuring our progress is critical. RWJF uses a set of national measures to help track the journey of Building a Culture of Health. Continually collecting and reviewing measurement data tells us if we are making investments into the right areas. It helps communities understand areas of success or where more knowledge or work is necessary. It also helps illuminate trends and pinpoint areas where targeted efforts hold even more benefits for the future.

How We Work

RWJF works in collaboration with policymakers, business leaders, community groups and many other stakeholders. Together, we share a common interest in addressing the many harmful obstacles to well-being, including poverty, powerlessness, and discrimination, and advancing health equity for all.

We focus on identifying, illuminating, and addressing barriers to health, particularly those caused by structural racism and its intersection with other forms of discrimination, including sexism, ableism, and prejudice based on sexual orientation.

We lean on evidence to advance health equity. We cultivate leaders who work individually and collectively across sectors to address health equity. We promote policies, practices, and systems-change to dismantle the structural barriers to well-being created by racism. And we work to amplify voices to shift national conversations and attitudes about health and health equity.
