How To Tell Your Story

Your personal story around health equity matters. Check out these tips on how to tell your story better from renowned storytelling organization The Moth.

Share a story that matters to you.

When you share a story you care deeply about, it inspires others to care too. Start with a memory that’s important to you—a moment when injustice was revealed to you, a time you decided to stand up for what’s right, a moment when you realized you could make an impact. The earlier you say what mattered to you, the earlier your audience will be invested in your story.

Tell us how you’ve changed.

The most important experiences in our lives change us. How have the events in your story changed you and your relationship with the world? Define who you are in the beginning and who you become in the end. Your story is an opportunity to create a map for your audience: this is how I changed and now you can, too.

Remember with all your senses.

Your story is most memorable when your audience can drop themselves into it. Describe important moments in detail. Express how you felt, reveal your inner thoughts, use dialogue. Be specific about colors, textures, and sounds to bring your memories alive for your audience.

Speak your truth.

The best way to tell your story is to tell it honestly, in your own voice. Sharing your personal story is one powerful way to shine a light on the health equity challenges many people face every day. You create an impact when you share the truth of your experience in a way that is authentic to you.
